Hello everyone! Today I’m going to be sharing a very different blog post from what I typically write. I feel like lately everyone (including myself) is getting caught up on Instagram/Netflix/YouTube…and yet there are so many things that bring me joy that do NOT come from a screen. I thought I’d compile some of these things in a list – partly just for your reading enjoyment, and the other part as accountability for myself. There is a world that exists beyond my phone, and I really need to start enjoying it more. I hope you find this post entertaining and maybe get some inspiration to seek joy from outside of a device.
Listening to Music with Earbuds In
Music just gets to me, man. I love long car rides where all I do is sit with my earbuds in and let the music flow through my veins. Some of my favorite artists at the moment are Twenty One Pilots, Lauv, and Lauren Daigle.
Reading a Suspense/Crime Novel
This is my favorite genre of book, I love suspense and crime novels so much. Dee Henderson is my favorite crime novelist and Andrew Klavan is my favorite suspense author. I love getting so sucked into a story that the hours just seem to slip by as you’re snuggled up under a blanket, hot chocolate in hand, eagerly turning the pages. It’s one of my favorite places to be.
Making a Smoothie Bowl
Smoothie bowls are a bit time-consuming, but they’re oh so delicious and cute for the ‘gram. My favorite type of smoothie is strawberry, banana, and mango + yummy toppings like shredded coconut, dark chocolate, and granola. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.
Doodling in a Sketchbook
I am most definitely not an artist, but I enjoy doing sketches from time to time. Creating art as a perfectionist is quite the challenge – that’s why I prefer cute little pencil sketches instead of ink drawing/painting. They’re much more forgiving. Erasers are my best friend when I draw (I’m pretty sure actual artists would think that’s a sin but eh, I can live with that).
Learning a New Song on the Piano
Playing the piano is something I’ve loved for a long time, even though I don’t do it that often anymore. I stopped taking lessons and playing altogether when I was 12, but I started to pick it back up again when I was about 15. YouTube has some great, easy tutorials for piano – this is one of my favorite ways to learn new songs.
Doing Creative Makeup Looks
Makeup is one of my biggest passions. Lately I’ve just been doing natural looks because of a lack of time, but I really want to get back into colorful, fun looks. I have so many eyeshadow palettes that just sit in my drawers, and I think it’s time to pull them out again.
Spending Time with My Boyfriend
This is truly one of my favorite ways to spend my time. How is everything 100x more fun when you’re with the person you love? I’m so grateful for him and wow just writing this is making me miss him. 😅 I won’t get to see him for a couple more days….I suppose I’ll survive. Although you better believe that as soon as I finish writing this I’m going to go text him. I’ll tell him y’all say hi!
Playing Games with My Mom
Ever since my mom got an iPad we’ve been playing Anagrams allll the time. (I’m currently the reigning champion.) We also love card games and Sequence. My mom is so amazing and one of my greatest friends! I swear that we share a brain, it’s scary how similar we are. We say the same thing (like, weird things) at the same time at least 5 times a day. What can I say, I get my coolness from her.
Trying New Recipes
I love to experiment with fun new recipes! Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration…although I always set out to make something healthy and end up making some sort of triple chocolate lava butter ice cream cookie sandwich. It’s cool though, I’ll just work it off. Oh wait, I haven’t been to the gym in like 2 months. There goes that idea. Please pass the chips.
(To be fair, I have a halfway decent reason for not working out lately – my knee is still messed up from the car accident and I can only do so much exercise without straining it.)
Taking Photos of Literally Anything
Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, but I don’t do it nearly as much as I used to. Self-portraits are some of my favorite types of photos to take – it’s so satisfying to do all of the work yourself. The self-timer feature will be your best friend if you ever decide to try out self-portraits for yourself.
I hope you enjoyed this post – like I said, it’s a little different than what I usually post but I thought it would be fun to share.
Have a great rest of your week, everyone!
PS…super exciting interview with two people I look up to a lot coming soon. Stay tuned!
